This Memorial Day as we pay our respects to those who have lost their lives defending our freedoms. Here is one veteran's experience, which we appreciate, knowing so many have given their lives so that all Americans may live free.

Colonel Norm Golden, of Woodbury, served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. He then earned a BA in English with a minor in history from St. Mary's College in Winona, MN. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force from 1961 until 1989 with ten years of Cargo Transport, twelve years of Search and Rescue and six years as Civil Air Patrol Liaison. Next, he worked for Raytheon, Link, Lockheed as Simulator Instructor for Military Flight Crews in Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. When he retired in 1999 he was the manager of Minneapolis C-130 Flight Simulator for Reserve and Air Nation Guard C-130 Aircrews.
